The spiritual life is a true gift from God
For enhancing the soul of man.
The Life of Christ is the model He used;
Engraved in His Great Master Plan.

The seeds of this separate, spiritual life
By God's hand have been sown,
Set apart from the worldly to nurture and grow
As new life to then become known.

Before we accept this free gift from God,
The shell of old lives must be shed.
The worldly life is replaced by the new,
And the shells that were molted are dead.

Difficult it becomes to reject the old shell,
We're reluctant to just let it go,
So we flaunt this deadened and empty facade,
In a futile and meaningless show.

The old self we may attempt to revive
It now in new clothing is dressed.
With the hope that fresh colors will give it new life,
That others may then be impressed.

But the phoniness soon will erode the facade
And a great burden it will then be.
And I know I will have to discard it for good,
If ever I am to be free.

Free from envy and free from greed,
From jealousy and from hate.
By acceptance of Christ and by trusting in God,
Death never will fashion my fate.

The two selves never can co-exist,
The false mixes not with the true.
As with oil and water they never will blend.
The old cannot live with the new.
