Oh little sparrow, brown and muddy gray.
What is the reason God made you this way?
You are not pretty and you cannot sing.
You lack the grace of gulls when on the wing.

The robin wears a shiny coat of red,
The blue jay sports a crown atop his head.
Canaries sing a song from throats of gold,
The oriole shows beauty to behold.

No answer did the little sparrow give.
God placed him here a common life to live.
He knew that just a common bird was he.
I knew that he was very much like me.

Just how he feels I think I understand,
For I, like him, am just a common man.
